Self-Aligning Ball Bearings Supplier
Self-aligning ball bearings are a specialized type of rolling bearing designed to automatically compensate for angular misalignment between a rotating shaft and its housing. Unlike standard ball bearings that require perfect alignment, self-aligning bearings can tolerate a small angular deviation (typically a few degrees) without sacrificing performance. They achieve this through a unique construction: two rows of balls in a common inner ring, and a spherical (concave) raceway on the outer ring. This allows the inner ring, balls, and cage to tilt and swivel inside the outer ring, adjusting automatically if the shaft or housing is misaligned. The result is a bearing that runs smoothly even when mounting errors, shaft deflection, or other misalignments are present. In practical terms, self-aligning ball bearings are often described as double-row ball bearings with a spherical outer ring.
Similar to other ball bearings, these products can be offered in open, shielded, or sealed configurations for lubrication retention and contaminant protection. Letters like Z or ZZ indicate metal shields on one or both sides of the bearing, while RS/2RS (or RZ/2RZ) indicate rubber seals (contact or low-contact) on one or both sides. The bore can be provided in cylindrical bore or tapered bore. A tapered bore is indicated by suffix “K” in the designation (e.g. 1308K)
At BRK Bearings, we provide the following series of self-aligning ball bearings, all of which are double-row designs (stainless steel version also available):
- 1200 Series (Light / Extra Narrow): Compact and space-saving self-aligning ball bearings designed for light to moderate radial loads in low-profile installations. They have smaller outer diameter and narrow width.
- 1300 Series (Medium / Narrow): Versatile general-purpose bearings offering a balance between size and load capacity, suitable for most standard applications. They have wider cross-section than the 1200 series.
- 2200 Series (Wide / Medium-Heavy Duty): Wide-body versions of the 1200 series featuring increased bearing width for enhanced radial load handling and durability.
- 2300 Series (Extra Wide / Heavy Duty): The heaviest-duty self-aligning series, engineered for applications requiring maximum radial load capacity and operational stability. They have extra-wide design that accommodates larger ball complements.

Characteristics and Key Benefits
A self-aligning ball bearing has the following characteristics and benefits, given its unique structure.
- Misalignment Capability: Self-aligning ball bearings typically accommodate angular misalignments of 3°–4°, with some smaller sizes allowing up to ~5° under light loads. Sealed versions have slightly lower limits (~1.5°–2°), making these bearings ideal where shaft deflection or imperfect alignment is expected.
- Contact Geometry and Load Capacities: Self-aligning ball bearings have two rows of balls that share radial loads effectively, but their near-zero contact angle means limited axial load capacity. They tolerate only small thrust forces and are unsuitable for heavy axial loads, which are better handled by angular contact or spherical roller bearings
- Friction and Speed: With low internal friction and the ability to correct misalignment, these bearings generate minimal heat and support high-speed operation. Their design reduces edge stress and vibration, making them ideal for smooth, quiet performance under light to moderate loads.
Cylindrical Bore vs. Tapered Bore
BRK's self-aligning ball bearings can be produced with two main bore types:
- Cylindrical bore – a straight bore, denoted by just the basic bearing number (e.g. 1308).
- Tapered bore – a conical bore (usually with a 1:12 taper). A tapered bore is indicated by suffix “K” in the designation (e.g. 1308K).
Bearings with tapered bores are commonly mounted using an adapter sleeve or tapered shaft seat, allowing flexible positioning along a straight shaft and secure locking with a nut. We generally recommend tapered-bore self-aligning ball bearings for easy installation and removal. The adapter sleeve setup avoids machining shaft shoulders or threads, streamlining mounting. Most such bearings use a 1:12 taper (denoted by K); for example, “2210K” indicates a 1:12 taper, enabling tight shaft grip and some adjustment of internal clearance during mounting
Sealed vs. Open Variants
BRK can provide self-aligning ball bearings in an open design (no integral seals) or sealed design.
-
Open Type: Common in larger sizes, open self-aligning ball bearings have no built-in seals and allow for periodic relubrication. They are suitable for clean environments or where regular maintenance is possible, offering greater misalignment capacity (up to ~3°–4°) compared to sealed types. Due to this reason, many self-aligning ball bearings are of the open type
-
Sealed Type (RS/ZZ): Typically available in small to medium sizes, sealed variants come factory-lubricated and are designed for maintenance-free operation. They offer strong protection against dust and moisture but allow slightly less misalignment (often up to ~1.5°), making them ideal for contaminated or hard-to-maintain environments.
Applications of Self-Aligning Ball Bearings
- Industrial Machineries
- Industrial Fans and Blowers: Used in high-speed fans to reduce noise and vibration caused by shaft deflection or mounting errors, offering smooth, quiet performance in HVAC and ventilation systems.
- Pumps and Blowers: Placed at outboard ends of pump shafts to absorb misalignment from impeller loads or thermal effects, improving reliability and reducing stress.
- Mining and Construction Equipment: Common in conveyors, crushers, and pulleys to handle misalignment from heavy loads and structural flex; sealed versions help resist dust and debris
- Agricultural Machinery: Widely used in farm equipment like mowers and tillers to accommodate frame misalignment and shock loads, especially with sealed, easy-to-replace units
- Automotive and Vehicle Systems: Found in steering columns, center supports, and accessory drives where slight shaft flex or misalignment must be absorbed without binding
- Household Appliances: Applied in ceiling fans and washers for quieter, smoother rotation when mounting alignment isn’t perfect, benefiting consumer comfort and durability.
